Psychologist Theresa P. Shank, Ph.D.
  Dr. Shank

Theresa P. Shank, Ph.D. . is a licensed psychologist specializing in the treatment of anxiety disorders, pediatric and adult obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and body focused repetitive disorders (BFRBs) such as skin picking and hair pulling. Using a warm, playful interpersonal style, as well as her extensive knowledge of child and adolescent development, Dr. Shank has helped numerous clients with OCD, social anxiety, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, fear of vomiting (emetophobia), separation anxiety, skin-picking, and hair-pulling successfully manage their symptoms and return to calmer, happier, and more fulfilling lives. Dr. Shank uses a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and family therapy in her work. When treating OCD, she uses the “gold standard” treatment of exposure and response prevention (E/RP), which teaches clients to manage their intrusive thoughts, refrain from performing their compulsions, and tolerate the anxiety that comes when the OCD cycle is interrupted. Providing developmentally appropriate education to the clients is integral to her practice approach, as is giving parents substantial training in how to support their child’s return to health. For clients taking medication, Dr. Shank regularly consults with pediatricians, primary care physicians, and psychiatrists to coordinate care and achieve maximum benefit for the client. When symptoms interfere with school functioning, Dr. Shank consults with school personnel on intervention techniques and accommodations to enable the student to progress through the school day as smoothly as possible. Additionally, she provides in-vivo therapy to clients in public settings to help them learn how to manage their symptoms “in real time.” Finally, Dr. Shank uses her extensive knowledge of attention deficit disorders, executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, and learning challenges in her work, so that maximum progress can be attained when these are additional areas of concern for the child or teen.

Dr. Shank holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Union College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated summa cum laude. After completing a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1992 and a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Psychology at the University of Michigan (Flint) in 1994, Dr. Shank accepted the position of supervising psychologist for the post-doctoral fellowship program in Developmental Pediatrics at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, where she focused on assessment, research, and training in the area of developmental disabilities in young children. Eager to provide therapy to children again, Dr. Shank transitioned to a private practice setting in 2000 and joined CPE Clinic, LLC as the Director of Psychological Services in 2013.

Dr. Shank serves on the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Obsessive Compulsive Foundation (IOCDF). She has received advanced training through the IOCDF in treating OCD and BFRBs and participates in a monthly peer-consultation group with four other local OCD experts. She regularly speaks to parents and other health professionals about working with children and teens with OCD and anxiety. Dr. Shank is also in the process of raising two teenage children, which enables her to bring empathy, humor, and a realistic perspective on what it means to be a parent to her work.
